October 9th, 2024, Neve Schecter, Tel Aviv.

On the evening of October 9, 2024, at the Neve Schechter Cultural Center, the Abrahamic Reunion hosted an extraordinary event that brought together members of the Jewish and Muslim and Christian communities amidst the violence and war. Neve Schechter, in Tel Aviv, welcomed an entire bus of Palestinians from East Jerusalem. Happening just a few days before Yom Kippur, the gathering served as a significant step toward fostering interfaith dialogue, unity, and love during this particularly challenging period in the region.

The event began with a warm welcome from Sheikh Ghassan, who spoke passionately about the importance of meeting and engaging with one another. He emphasized how vital it is, especially in such turbulent times, for communities to come together, learn from each other, and build relationships based on mutual respect and understanding.

Following Sheikh Ghassan’s remarks, David Less addressed the audience via Zoom. He spoke about the value of events like these, which promote not only understanding but also empathy, especially during times of crisis. His words were a reminder of the need for continued efforts to build bridges between different communities.

Next, Rabbi Roberto Arbib, a key figure at Neve Schechter, delivered a moving speech. Rabbi Arbib reflected on the significance of the Neve Schechter Cultural Center, which also serves as a synagogue. He shared his dream of seeing Jews and Muslims coming together in a synagogue, an aspiration that was beautifully realized at this event. He expressed how deeply meaningful it was to be gathering as one, just days before Yom Kippur, a time of reflection and repentance in Judaism. His words resonated with all in attendance, creating a profound moment of connection.

After the rabbi’s heartfelt speech, the attendees enjoyed a beautiful interlude of Sufi music, performed by Said Abbasi and his band. The music added a spiritual and calming energy to the gathering, further deepening the shared experience of the event.

Following the music break, Sheikh Ghassan introduced two esteemed scholars: AR Israeli Board Member, Dr. Khaled Abu Ras, and Professor Avi Elkayam from Bar Ilan University and Derekh Avraham. Both speakers addressed the theme of religion as a force for tolerance and love. They discussed how, according to religious teachings, love for others is central to spiritual fulfillment and entry into paradise. Their joint message underscored the common values shared by both Judaism and Islam, reinforcing the event’s overarching theme of unity.

The evening concluded with a captivating music concert by the renowned Yair Dalal, whose song, “Zaman el Salaam,” has become the uplifting and soul-searching theme-song of the Abrahamic Reunion’s prayer vigils for peace and safety in the Holy Land. Dalal’s performance was a fitting end to the evening, leaving the audience inspired and uplifted.

This intercultural music event at Neve Schechter was a powerful demonstration of the potential for unity between Jews, Muslims and Christians in the Holy Land. It was a reminder that, despite the challenges we face, there is always room for love, understanding, and shared humanity. The words, music, and energy of the night will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on all who attended.
